OLE for Process Control
<standard> (OPC) A set of seven open standards for connectivity and interoperability of industrial automation and the enterprise systems. Based on fundamental and evolving standards and technology of the general computing market, the OPC Foundation adapts and creates specifications that fill industry-specific needs. OPC Foundation (http://opcfoundation.org/). (2003-05-21)
Open Platform Communications
Open Platform Communications (OPC) is a series of standards and specifications for industrial telecommunication. They are based on Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) for process control.
Process control
  • Example of level control system of a [[continuous stirred-tank reactor]]. The flow control into the tank would be cascaded off the level control.
  • Functional levels of a manufacturing control operation
  • A modern control room where plant information and controls are displayed on computer graphics screens. The operators are seated as they can view and control any part of the process from their screens, whilst retaining a plant overview.
  • valve positioner]] ensures the [[control valve]] operates correctly.
ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE THAT DEALS WITH ARCHITECTURES, MECHANISMS AND ALGORITHMS FOR MAINTAINING THE OUTPUT OF A SPECIFIC PROCESS WITHIN A DESIRED RANGE
Process Control; Process Control (computing); Process dynamics; Process monitoring; Process control
An industrial process control in continuous production processes is a discipline that uses industrial control systems to achieve a production level of consistency, economy and safety which could not be achieved purely by human manual control. It is implemented widely in industries such as automotive, mining, dredging, oil refining, pulp and paper manufacturing, chemical processing and power generating plants.

Open Platform Communications

Open Platform Communications (OPC) is a series of standards and specifications for industrial telecommunication. They are based on Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) for process control. An industrial automation task force developed the original standard in 1996 under the name OLE for Process Control. OPC specifies the communication of real-time plant data between control devices from different manufacturers.

After the initial release in 1996, the OPC Foundation was created to maintain the standards. Since OPC has been adopted beyond the field of process control, the OPC Foundation changed the name to Open Platform Communications in 2011. The change in name reflects the applications of OPC technology for applications in building automation, discrete manufacturing, process control and others. OPC has also grown beyond its original OLE implementation to include other data transportation technologies including Microsoft Corporation's .NET Framework, XML, and even the OPC Foundation's binary-encoded TCP format.
